Wat Chedi Luang
Discovering the Past at Wat Chedi Luang
The Great Stupa of Wat Chedi Luang: A Journey Through Time
Wat
Chedi Luang, also known as the Temple of the Large Stupa, is a historic
Buddhist temple located in the heart of Chiang Mai, Thailand. King Saen Muang
Ma started building the temple in the 14th century to enshrine the relics of
his father, but it wasn't until the reign of King Tilokarat that the temple was
completed, reaching a height of 90 meters. This chedi remained the tallest
structure in Chiang Mai for over 500 years, before being partly destroyed in an
earthquake in 1545. Today, the restored chedi stands at 60 meters tall.
One
of the highlights of visiting Wat Chedi Luang is witnessing the wian tian
ceremony during one of the main Buddhist festival days. Another impressive
feature of the temple is the large viharn, built in 1928, with a standing Buddha
image inside known as the Phra Chao Attarot. The cross-shaped hall to the south
of the main viharn contains the city pillar, surrounded by statues of guardian
spirits.
Another
highlight of the temple is the Lanna campus of the Mahamakut Buddhist University,
located in one of the other buildings in the compound. Visitors can also admire
the viharn with a reclining Buddha and the Sangkhachai Buddha to the west of
the chedi. There is also an exit that leads out onto Chaban Road.
